A True Three-Ring Circus

Each experience creates its own unique reactions. Those who gravitate to the hither and thither lifestyle of the circus even AFTER Arcadia are rather the unique crowd. What is often, though not always, the case of members of the Three Rings is that they were tempted more than they were ever tricked.

Though a place of unspeakable horrors, Fae is a place of unimaginable beauty. It is the stuff of legends, both Disney and Grimm. There are many whose interest is piqued at the mere concept of something more interest than this monotonous world.

But most do not bargain for just how capricious the Gentry are. None are able to guess at what their ephemeral moods will bring or take with them. Most human-and eventually changeling-minds have little capacity to keep up and grow, at the very least, exhausted of the ebb and flow.

Upon escaping though, where is one to go? When every glance in the mirror hammers home the point that you are no longer of this world. You do not belong. You are unnatural.

These thoughts poison the mind, force a further escape from the society that was so pined for. And then, much like the starry eyed lads and lasses of the day, they turn their eyes to the circus. To be the man on the flying trapeze, to be loved for the monster that you are, to build the world within which this is possible. This is the dream of the circus to parallel the nightmare of everyday life.

Center Ring

The true romance that is the circus. This is what the children run away to join. Acrobatics, equestrian feats, knife-throwing, lion-taming, glory-seeking goodness. Astounding equestrians and bumbling clowns entertain the masses.

Those of the Center Ring know acclaim. They draw the attention of others, and are rarely without an audience.

Backstage

Every show has its supporting cast. The circus is no different. For every tightrope that rises to the heavens, there are young strapping men in boots and overalls to erect it. A very blue collar, every day visual for our outlandish spectacle.

It is because of this that they are often the most grounded of those within the circus. They experience neither the grandeur nor disdain. While a good number of the Three Rings went to Faerie, in a way, willingly, those who eventually joined the backstage are most likely to have left of boredom.

Backstage courtiers thus have a certain affinity to situations of realization; the discovery of the hidden wires, seeing the trapdoor, meeting the man behind the curtain. They harvest glamour from these moments of revelation.

This is not to say that they are likely to point out that Santa isn’t real. Those of the backstage understand that the initial hope that the magic is real, that anything is possible is necessary for humanity. It is the loss of that innocence that grounds us though, according to these changelings.

h3. Sideshow

The gilded stage draws in the attention of all comers and goers alike. But that’s not enough for those more…curious. More morbid among us. This is what the sideshow is for; to provide some shock to the shock and awe.

Those of the sideshow do not know the glory of Center Ring, nor are they graced with the brevity with which the clowns are regarded. That being said, these people catch the eye of the crowds in their own way, an unnatural and unnerving sort of way.

Do not let the appearance of their situation upset you, though. Hatred and jeering is not what is to be expected. These performers are still just that. They garner acclaim, and they are loved in their own way.

These courtiers understand that their time in Faerie has inexorably changed them. They do not delude themselves with illusions of humanity. To be kissed by some prince and rescued from this form is a tall tale for the center ring. Instead they join society as the oddities that they are.

The fascination that they provoke is how they grow to understand humanity, and how they harvest glamour. This constant desire to understand, this pomp and circumstance reserved for that which people do not understand, is what makes humans humans.
